The author has taken one chapter from Exodus and turned it into a full-length novel. Dinah is the only sister of Joseph and his eleven brothers. This is her story, told from the red tent, the only place in her society where women can be free of men. They go there for births, initiations, gossip and deaths, and to celebrate their femininity. After reading this book, you gain insight into how life is for a woman in a patriarchal society. If you enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha, you won't want to miss it. While Anita Diamant took the character names and their basic situation from the Book of Genesis, she manages to transcend that simple story, adding flesh and vitality, breathing life into it. And who better than a female author to bring the story of daughters and mothers to life? In fact, the very title is evocative of this life-giving role, for it was here, within the red tents, that women separated to during menstruation and childbirth. Although Diamant is re-imagining a story originally told by men, she liberates the characters, allowing each woman her own flaws, gifts and story. “I had four mothers, each of them…giving me different gifts, cursing me with different fears.” So begins the complex tale of not only Dinah, Jacob’s only surviving daughter, but also of all the women in her life, including the four sisters who are Jacob’s wives – Leah, Rachel, Zilpah and Bilhah. Diamant is absolutely brilliant in taking the life of Dinah, mentioned only in passing in the bible, and explicating a complete life story that is beautiful and tragic and so powerful. I had been expecting a well written,interesting perspective on the lives of women in biblical times. Instead, I waded through repetetive, tedious script. Diamant seems preoccupied with lineage. There are very few moving descriptive passages. Her portrayal of love scenes is sophomoric. Most disappointing was her treatment of female friendships and the blessings of motherhood.
