Then again, this is a lot funnier than typical kid's stuff. Dav Pilkey has combined chapter book and comic book formats to hilarious advantage with this hugely popular series. George and Harold are two mischievous grade-schoolers (with remarkably Calvin-esque expressions) whose favourite pastimes are rearranging the letters on the school sign to make stupid sayings (why pass up a chance to see the word "fart" in print?) and playing incredibly complex practical jokes on their teachers. In the three previous Captain Underpants books, George and Harold have tried to rein in their principal, Mr. Krupp, whom they "accidentally" hypnotized into believing he is their own comic book hero, Captain Underpants! He has, surprisingly, acquired a few superpowers and is transformed by the snap of a finger. Good thing, too, because the school is about to face a grave enemy: a diminutive scientist named Professor Pippy P. Poopypants. Unable to stop the children laughing at his ridiculous name, the professor snaps, and uses two of his inventions to shrink the school and enlarge his pet-exercising machine, the Gerbil-Jogger 2000, to serve as his giant robotic body. He terrorizes the school and makes everyone change their sensible names to outlandish Swisslandish names, based on a clever chart. (My name, as I write this, is now Stinky Wafflesniffer). Silly? Yes. Funny? That, too. There are tons of laughs to be had in this cleverly written and unabashedly lowbrow series, which gives wedgies to authority figures and a little credit to kids. Ages 7-10.
